Thank you for this story. it's just been forwarded to me by a friend, a fellow traveler in a program called the Watson Fellowship, (www.watsonfellowship.org).
I am from Uganda and I came to the United States five years ago to go to school. So it's always very interesting for me to understand how people here and in the rest of the west view and understand my continent and the rest of the world, especially the developing world.
It can be really challenging to, if I may, sort of "re-calibrate" one's "priorities" when they get from one culture or world to another.
And then again, the United States can be a huge place, with people with so many different experiences and backgrounds, it often amazes me when I meet people who have grown up in this country but who somehow so understand the third world without having ever been there.
And then of course people in the third world who would fit in so wonderfully well with the most advanced aspects of western culture.
Its a tricky world we live in!!!

RP,

Great story. I was just a little bored today at the office and it brightened my day. Could have been flamingos in suits... That would be wierd...

When I was working in Ecuador (Amazon jungle dot reality) I remember talking to one local who said that there were three types of mushrooms in the area - you could eat two of them, but the third one would turn you into a lizard. He didn't know which was which so I passed on the mushroom sauce.

Hope you're doing well. If you get to Denver, let me know. Would be great to see you and catch up on recent history.

Brian,

You will find the same "theory" about the external subconscious put forth in a great book called "Wild People" about the tribes of Borneo and also in a book I cite in my second novel, "White Man's Grave," called "Paths Toward A Clearing" by Michael Jackson.

Thanks,

Hi,

This was a fascinating read. The whole thing was interesting, but I'll probably be chewing on the idea of external subconscious versus internal subconscious for a while.

Thanks for sharing this!

Sure, John.

Early next week I'll send you a PDF that Eric Buhrman made. It uses the image above but has a nice cool font, with eek! blood stains.

Why not have your son do one drawing to start, if he's interested, and then we'll have a look?

Thank you,

Hey Richard,

Great story! Thanks for providing it via Creative Commons.

My son is an illustrator. Would you mind if I asked him to do some pen-and-ink illustrations of your story, maybe four or five panels? If I can talk him into it, maybe they would look good in the PDF...
